Timber needs regular staining/sealing to resist rot and UV damage; aluminium doesn't rust or rot and needs almost no upkeep.
The trade-off
Aluminium typically costs more upfront but far less over the structure's lifetime once you account for timber's ongoing maintenance. In coastal areas especially, aluminium's corrosion resistance is a significant advantage.
