Louvre roof & pergola cost in NZ (2026)

Reviewed by the Impact Outdoors Team

The honest answer to "how much does a louvre roof or pergola cost?" is that it depends on five or six things you can pin down in a few minutes. This guide walks through each one, then lets you put your own measurements into our calculator for an instant estimate for your project, not a national average.

What drives the cost

1. Size: the biggest single factor

Outdoor structures are priced by the area they cover, so a 3 × 4 m cover over a back door and a 6 × 5 m roof over a full entertaining deck sit in very different brackets. Measure the width along the house and how far out from it you want the roof to reach, then multiply the two. That area is what the calculator below works from.

2. Roof type: fixed, opening or solid

A fixed polycarbonate roof (our Elite Canopy) is the most economical way to keep rain off while letting 25–88% of the light through, depending on the tint. A metal roof gives complete shade and rain cover. An opening louvre roof uses motorised aluminium blades you can angle for sun or close flat against rain, and costs the most of the three because of the blade mechanism, motor and wiring.

3. Manual or motorised

Louvre roofs and outdoor blinds both come in manual and motorised versions. Motorised adds the motor, a remote or app control and an electrician’s sign-off, and options like a rain sensor that closes the roof automatically or integrated LED lighting add to that.

4. Sides and add-ons

The roof is only part of the budget if you also want shelter from the side. Outdoor blinds, fixed glass or louvre panels, or a fully enclosed sunroom each add cost per side, but they are what turns a covered deck into a space you use through winter.

5. Building consent and engineering

Some open pergolas and canopies don’t need building consent, while larger, roofed or enclosed structures can. Where consent or engineering is needed, the fees and drawings are part of the real cost, so ask every supplier whether their quote includes them. You can check your own project on the government’s Can I Build It? tool.

6. Your site

Ground conditions, the footings needed, whether the roof fixes to the house or stands free, access for materials, and the height of the attachment point all change the labour involved. These are why an onsite measure gives a firmer number than any online estimate.

Check consent for your own site on Can I Build It?, or read our buyer guide.

Comparing quotes like for like

  • Check that each quote covers the same size, roof type and number of enclosed sides.
  • Ask whether installation, consent, engineering and footings are included or extra.
  • Compare structural warranty length and what it covers. Our Elite Canopies and Opening Louvres carry a 10-year structural warranty.
  • Ask for wind and snow ratings. Our Elite Canopy is rated to 160 km/h wind and 50 cm of snow, and our Opening Louvre roof to 200 km/h and 80 cm.
  • Ask how drainage is handled. Concealed gutters inside the posts look tidier than external downpipes.

Common questions

Is a louvre roof worth the extra over a fixed pergola?

If you want full sun on some days and a sealed roof on others, yes. If you mainly want rain cover with good light, a fixed polycarbonate canopy does that for less.

Why don’t you list prices on the website?

Because size, roof type and site conditions move the number so much that a single “from” price is usually wrong for your project. The calculator gives you an estimate for your own dimensions, and a free measure turns it into a fixed quote.

How long does installation take?

Most single-bay canopies are installed in one to two days once materials are on site. Louvre roofs take a little longer because of wiring and commissioning, and sunrooms longer again.
